Please do not put rechargeable batteries in the garbage or recycling bin. Batteries need to be disposed of at one of the Solid Waste Authority's (SWA) designated centers or major retailers with drop-off locations.

Lithium batteries have been responsible for fires in transportation, garbage and recycling facilities nationwide when they become damaged by sorting and processing machinery.

In an effort to inform constituents of this potential hazard, the Board of County Commissioners, sitting as the SWA Board, recently requested SWA officials initiate a public outreach campaign concerning the proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Additionally, we have asked staff to explore installing specially designed disposal bins for these batteries at convenient locations countywide.

Regular alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9 volts) can be placed in your garbage.

Help Animal Care & Control Clear the Kennel
May adoptions only $5
Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety’s Division of Animal Care and Control (ACC) is asking the community to help with efforts to find homes for the 56 adoptable dogs that are in the kennel. As the only open-admission shelter in the county, ACC accepts all animals in need regardless of their condition. Services are provided to lost, homeless and unwanted animals, and help is needed to continue caring for them.

The community can help by adopting or fostering. The kennel has adoptable dogs with different personalities that would suit anyone’s lifestyle. Whether looking for a big dog, small dog, playful pup or couch potato, the shelter has a perfect dog for a family. During the month of May, ACC is offering $5 adoptions to motivate the community to adopt instead of shop (#AdoptDontShop) for a furry friend. By adopting or fostering, a dog experiences time in a loving home, and space for another dog in need is created in the shelter.

If looking for a short-term commitment, ACC is encouraging residents to consider becoming a foster through the Foster2Rescue program. Through this program, foster parents take care of a pet for two to six weeks until a forever home is found through the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. All supplies such as food, crate, leash, collar and preventatives are provided. All the foster needs to provide is some love.

PBCACC encourages those interested in fostering or adopting to meet their perfect match in person. Pets can also be viewed online at https://secure.co.palm-beach.fl.us/snap/home. The Foster and adoption application is completed in person at PBCACC. No appointment is needed.

Adoption Center hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

There are a variety of options and techniques property owners can use to help reduce or eliminate nuisance-iguanas. Many of these strategies are simple and easily employed. This list of frequently asked questions will help guide you through this process.

Does LWDD provide eradication services for iguana infestations?

LWDD is a single purpose special district with the authority to provide flood control and water supply to the residents within its boundary. Tax assessments are collected for the maintenance and operation of these facilities. Iguanas do not interfere with LWDD’s flood control operations; therefore, LWDD does not provide iguana eradication services.

What might be attracting the iguanas to my property?

Typically, iguanas will use an area for foraging or for nesting. To prevent iguanas from entering your property consider what might attract them. Never feed iguanas – either intentionally or unintentionally. Food left outdoors will attract iguanas and can create problems for both you and your neighbors by creating dense concentrations of iguanas. Pans of cut fruit and outside pet food will attract iguanas as well as other unwanted visitors like rats and raccoons.

How can I prevent the iguanas from nesting?

You can remove protective covers including dense thickets, brush, or rock piles where iguanas congregate. Fill vacant iguana burrows with sand during the day when the animals are likely to be outside of the burrow. You do not want to fill these holes with any animals still inside.

Contrarily, some property owners have constructed artificial nesting habitats to attract iguanas. The purpose of this approach is to control reproduction. Iguanas lay their eggs in sand or mulch. By adding mulch piles or sand piles near sea walls, you can encourage iguanas to focus nesting on these controlled structures. Once eggs are deposited, they can be easily removed and then disposed of in a sealed plastic bag.

What type of landscape material can I plant to deter the iguanas?

Iguanas prefer to eat some very popular landscaping material such as: Hibiscus, Orchids, Roses, Nasturtiums, Impatiens and Purple Heart Plant. Iguanas prefer bright red, orange or yellow flowers and fruits and feed on tender leaves. Instead, plant species that are iguana-resistant, such as Milkweed, Pentas, and Citrus. Generally, plants with thick, tough, or waxy leaves will discourage iguana consumption. These types of leaves are less palatable and often difficult to digest. If the food source is removed, iguanas will be less likely to inhabit an area.

What types of exclusion techniques can I use?

Exclusion techniques can also be deployed to keep iguanas from damaging your property. Consider protecting valuable plants with cages or screen enclosures. Iguanas are excellent climbers. They may get into and on dwellings via overhanging trees. Trim overhanging branches to remove the unintentional “bridge” to buildings. Sheet metal guards on trees, palms, and dock pilings can prevent them from climbing.

Wire barriers can prevent digging on your property. In areas where iguanas burrow or dig, consider installing chicken wire fencing. This fencing should be buried several inches underground or the iguanas may dig underneath the fence.

What types of deterrent techniques can I use?

Several options can help you deter iguanas from your property. Property owners can surprise iguanas by spraying them with a water hose until they leave the area. You can also make loud noises to startle iguanas and create an unwelcome atmosphere around your property. Other techniques include hanging compact discs (CDs) near sea walls or on trees or other plants you want to protect. However, you will need to change the position of CDs on a weekly basis, so the iguanas do not become accustomed to their light reflections.

Is there an iguana repellent I can use?

While not proven, some property owners have experience success with iguana repellents. A homemade spray repellent can be made using garlic, lime juice, habanero pepper and dish soap. Iguanas loathe the smell of these ingredients and for the most part try to avoid the areas and any kind of food source that contains the smell of these ingredients. Using iguana repellents requires the need to redo the application each time it rains as the repellent will be washed away.

Where can I get professional help?

Residents are encouraged to seek professionals to remove iguanas from their property. Property owners can search the internet or phone book to locate wildlife control companies. Costs can vary depending on the extent of iguana infestation and the species of iguana that has invaded your property. Be sure to get a written quote from several service providers before contracting with a provider.

Can I kill the iguanas on my property?

Iguanas and all other wildlife are protected by anticruelty laws, and inhumane treatment of them is prohibited and punishable by state law. Inhumane treatment includes the use of poisons to kill iguanas; no poisons are legal to use on iguanas or any other reptile in Florida. Property owners that desire to kill the iguanas themselves must do so safely and humanely and follow the guideline provided by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at https://myfwc.com.

Can a property owner or a professional service provider enter LWDD’s canal right-of-way to trap or provide iguana eradication services?

Prior to working on LWDD’s right-of-way authorization is required. Property owners and/or professional service providers should contact LWDD for authorization at 561-498-5363 or email to permits@lwdd.net.

MEETING DEDICATION
• The meeting was dedicated by the PBC Fire Rescue Honor Guard and PBC Firefighters Pipes and Drums. Barbara Katz, Past President and Valencia Shores Delegate was remembered for her many contributions.
SPECIAL PRESENTATION – PBSO COLONEL ROBERT ALLEN AND MAJOR CHRIS KEANE
• Described the units that make up PBSO. On behalf of
Sheriff Bradshaw, thanked President Rappaport for her leadership and presented her with flowers.
HOST COMMUNITY WELCOME – VALENCIA SHORES
• Beth Rappaport thanked Valencia Shores for their hospitality and support, including the Audio Visual and Government Affairs Committees and all those who assisted with the set-up and floral arrangements.
• Joel Cohen, COBWRA Delegate, and Larry Schleyer, President, welcomed COBWRA and thanked the community volunteers and property manager.

• Thanked the many people who have supported her and honored the outgoing Board with plaques. Her main priorities as President were to increase awareness of what community associations can do to further public safety initiatives, and to highlight the work of our committees and board members. She and the Past Presidents presented Steve Wallace with the historical collection of COBWRA gavels and contributed a crystal one to the collection.

• Lightheartedly ribbed COBWRA Past Presidents and Elected Officials as he navigated the Installation of the 2022-2023 COBWRA Board. Environmental resources must be protected and PBC need a variety of community types in addition to gated, to serve the needs of the public.

ELECTED OFFICIALS’ REPORTS COMMISSIONER MARIA SACHS
• Commended the legislators who just returned from
Tallahassee for their efforts.
• Reported that the Commission is working on condo and
apartment building inspection and safety standards.
• Explained that steps are being taken to address the issues of increased traffic. She is a proponent of smart
development after infrastructure has been established.
FIRST RESPONDERS’ REPORTS PBSO CAPTAIN SHAWN EASTMAN
• Thanked Lt. Harvey of the K-9 Division for his
presentation to the Safety and Security Committee and
Steve Slade for his leadership as committee chair.

• Reported that Chief Patrick Kennedy will be the new PBC Fire Rescue Administrator, replacing Chief Reginald Duren who is leaving to become an Assistant County Administrator to Verdenia Baker, County Administrator.

• The Department encompasses a wide variety of
programs and activities. Some of the services provided include business licensing, consumer complaints, pursuing unfair business practices, gun licensing, implementing laws which impact agriculture, oversees funding of agriculture eligible for federal dollars, helping farmers with best practices for water conservation and pollution, and promotes agricultural products around the world. ➢ The park near Hypoluxo and Lyons featuring 18 pickleball courts and several dog runs will break ground late 2023 and completed in summer 2024.
➢ Canyon District Park Phase I is scheduled for completion late June 2022.
➢ Canyon District Park Phase II is scheduled to break ground in summer 2023 and completed in spring 2024.
➢ The Canyon library will break ground summer 2022 and completed summer 2023.
➢ The PBCFR Station at Flavor Pict and Lyons is on target to have the modular facilities, staff, and equipment ready by end of 2022.
➢ Flavor Pict Road from Lyons to 441 is scheduled to connect by the end of 2022.
➢ Flavor Pict Road from Lyons to Hagen is scheduled to connect with an overpass in 2025 or later.

• No reports were given due to the Legislators being in session and the funeral of a local dignitary coinciding with the meeting.

FIRST RESPONDERS’ REPORTS PBSO CAPTAIN SHAWN EASTMAN
• Reported car burglaries have significantly increased.
Almost all vehicles were UNLOCKED. Do not keep
valuables in the car and be sure to lock it.
• PBSO is concentrating on speeding and reckless driving
in school zones.
• “Coffee with a Cop” will begin in West Boynton.
• Thanked Sheriff Ric Bradshaw for his support and
guidance during the unusual challenges presented by COVID.

FIRE RESCUE BATTALION CHIEF PETE HUND
• Three high-priority events for PBCFR included multiple stations responding to a significant fire at an ice-skating rink and storage facility in Lake Worth; a person was rescued from a burning home by PBCFR Station 41 personnel; and the Jaws of Life were used at an auto accident on Route 441 south of Atlantic Ave.
• Follow PBCFR on social media sites including Facebook and Instagram.

Bulk Items This is Saturday MORNING, to the Curb by 6:00am for pick up. SATURDAYS.
Discarded furniture and appliances as well as other household items including toilets, bathtubs, water softeners, and similar household goods that will not fit into your SWA provided garbage cart is collected once a week on your scheduled bulk collection day.

Do not mix bulk items with vegetation.

Set-out description
Bulk items and debris from minor home repairs should be placed at your curb the night before or before 6 a.m. on your scheduled bulk collection day.

In unincorporated Palm Beach County, bulk item pick up is provided once a week and limited to 3 items on your scheduled bulk collection day. Should more than 3 items be placed at the curb, the hauler will remove 3 items and should tag the remaining items explaining that there is a 3 item limit for bulk items each week..

Place items like appliances (tape doors shut), furniture and large household items that do not fit in the cart at the curb, making sure that nothing is stacked on top of water or gas meters, under low branches or utility wires, or within 3 feet of mail boxes or fire hydrants.

"Preserve the Reserve” and let your opinion be counted Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners Meeting. At this meeting, County Commissioners will be voting on a text amendment, which if approved, would facilitate a land swap. The land swap would give the county 1,600 acres of land in Indian Trails Grove in the Acreage in exchange for permission to build 1,000 single family homes and 250 workforce housing units on the currently preserved 683-acre Hyder West parcel west of 441 in West Boca and West Delray.
